Frequently Asked Questions

  • How can I get from one venue to another on the island?

If you have a VIP Pass or higher, the festival will supply transportation to and from various strategic stops around the island. It is your responsibility to be at the stop with enough time to get to your next screening venue, event, or party. If you don’t want to wait around for festival transportation, the city does have an electric bus that goes to various points, and cab rides are available from the Catalina Transportation Services at 310-510-0025; also there are bicycles you can rent by the hour or day, golf-carts, and you can also walk from one venue to the other pretty comfortably if you choose. Bicycles can also be brought over on the ferry (for a fee) if you choose to get around on your own bicycle.

  • I want to make a day of it. What else can I do while in Avalon?

Please check out our “Partners” page (Under “Support”) for some amazing adventures.

And for more things to do, see below.

  • I want to spend the day on Catalina, but not spend the night, is there somewhere I can put my stuff while I explore the island?

Yes, there is a luggage check at the Catalina Express terminal. The cost is from $3 to $8 a bag, or you can use the large and deep lockers on the outside of the building (from the luggage check) by inserting 4 quarters.

  • May I bring my camera and take photographs?

Although you are NOT allowed to record copyrighted video and audio, or take any still images of the films being presented, cameras ARE allowed and encouraged all around the film festival events. And we hope you share your photos with us at #CatalinaFilm.  Any and all commercial shooting that is done within the city limits will require a Film Permit from the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce.  www.CatalinaChamber.com

  • What kind of films will be shown?

The program will include a wonderful mix of genres from filmmakers worldwide.  Please refer to our website or magazine book for screening series that may interest you or be appropriate for you and your guests. Please also refer to our film pages, as we will be adding the competing entries as soon as they are selected for this year’s film festival.

  • May I purchase a package?

Yes. And if you have already purchased individual tickets to the film festival, but want to purchase a package offer (if available), we will apply your existing ticket purchase to the film package you choose. Please book these packages as soon as possible to avoid being shut out, as some include travel items that get harder to fulfill as the dates get closer!

If you don’t have priority seating with your package, all other seating at the festival is on a first-come, first-served basis with your general admission tickets. We encourage guests to get in line early, socialize, network, and get ready to be entertained. However, please know that any reserved seating that is not occupied within 15 minutes of the screening will be filled with audience members.

  • May I bring my children?

While we have no minimum age, we do not encourage children to attend screenings of a mature nature (noted in the program). Children must be present with an adult or guardian, pay the full ticket price, and not disturb the filmmakers’ hard work being presented to an appreciative audience. It is the parents’ responsibility to watch them.

  • Are drinks available?

Yes, most venues around Avalon are offering refreshments for sale, or they are within immediate walking distance.

  • Do you serve food?

We do not serve food at our venues unless they are supplied by vendors (sponsored or for purchase) or clearly noted in our schedule of events (IE. Opening Gala, Festival parties, Special Programs, and other events). We recommend that you patronize one of the many restaurants in Avalon before or between screenings, events and special guests. Establishments range from fast-food stands to elegant sit-down restaurants. Food is not allowed in the theater besides the normal concessions you would expect to find.

  • Where do I check in or get my tickets for the Festival?

Check in & pass pickup is located at festival Check-In. Click here for festival check-in hours & box office locations.  Check-in will also take place at the Avalon Theatre on Friday & Saturday at 5pm.

  • What should I wear?

The month of September is a very beautiful and mild month for weather on Catalina. The days can average from 65-72 degrees, and the nights around 50-60 degrees when the sun goes down. So bring clothes that will allow you to enjoy the daytime weather, and maybe some warmer layers for the night-time fun around Avalon. For specific ATTIRE during our 5 day event, please go to our “How To Fest” page and see the attire requirements for each part of the day.

  • Can you recommend a hotel?

Yes. Please go to our amazing partners’ Hotels, Villas and condo vacation rentals we have listed on our “How To Fest” and “Partners” pages. Special return ferry trips added for the Catalina Film Festival will only return to the Long Beach Downtown Landing, so please make sure you book your departing tickets from the Long Beach Downtown Landing if you want a return ferry not on their standard schedule. The Island Express Helicopter is available for fast service to and from the island at 800 228-2566.  Parking ranges from $15 – $17 per 24 hours.

  • If something comes up, can I get a refund?

Please note that all ticket and pass sales are final. As we are a non-profit organization, these sales are a major fundraiser for our mission of “Imagination, Education and Destination” to help foster the growth of our filmmakers. Why is this the CFF policy for this event? As a destination film festival, on an exclusive island, with a calculated number of travel and hotel accommodations, we cannot offer refunds or accept cancellations when we have already turned people away because of the reservation we held for you. You are, however, free to sell or give your ticket to someone else, though we will not serve as an agent or go-between to help you do that. When we sell out, please note that we do not create a waiting list.
